Gastro pub in Chelmsford

The "Lion - Boreham" in Chelmsford, England, is a renowned pub and restaurant that has made a name for itself in the picturesque village of Boreham, near Chelmsford. It is part of a larger complex known as "The Lion Inn," which offers luxurious accommodations and event spaces alongside the restaurant area. The venue has transformed from a traditional pub into a modern "gastro pub" with a touch of French elegance, attracting both locals and visitors seeking a combination of high-quality food and a stylish atmosphere. It is an ideal place for special occasions, family dinners, or a relaxed evening with friends.

High quality British cuisine

The interior of the "Lion - Boreham" features a successful blend of historic charm and contemporary design. Rustic wooden beams and cozy fireplaces meet elegant details such as Art Deco elements and large onyx bars, adding a touch of sophistication. The restaurant area spans multiple rooms, including a light-filled Victorian orangery that offers views of the surrounding gardens. A particularly noteworthy feature is the private dining room, which, with its high ceilings and imposing fireplace, accommodates larger groups. Outside, a sunny garden area invites guests to relax amidst blooming flowers and lined linden trees, reminiscent of a Provençal terrace – an idyllic addition to the dining experience.

Special occasion at pub

The menu pays homage to British cuisine with modern accents and places great emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The Homemade Steak Pie is particularly popular, featuring tender meat, mushrooms, and ale encased in a crispy pastry lid, perfectly complemented by creamy mashed potatoes. The Chargrilled Sirloin Steak is also frequently praised – a juicy cut of meat served with garlic mushrooms and thick chips that impresses with its quality. For seafood lovers, the Fried Salt & Pepper Calamari is a flavorful starter served with homemade aioli and fresh salads. For dessert, the Chocolate Fudge Cake stands out as a warm, rich treat that delights the palate with its chocolaty intensity. The drink selection includes a wide range of beers, including local ales, as well as a carefully curated wine list to complement the meal.

Rustic restaurant with charm

Service at the "Lion - Boreham" is often described as outstanding, with a team that is friendly, attentive, and well-trained. Especially on busy days – such as Sunday lunches or celebrations – the staff remains committed to providing guests with a pleasant experience, even if there may occasionally be wait times. Many appreciate the option to reserve tables in advance, particularly for those wishing to dine in the restaurant area, as the pub is also known for its walk-in service. The family-friendly atmosphere is appealing, with a relaxed attitude towards children and even special menus, while its dog-friendly policy attracts walkers from the surrounding area.

Dog friendly restaurants in Boreham

Guest experiences are predominantly positive, with the quality of food, unique atmosphere, and beautiful surroundings often highlighted. However, there are isolated criticisms: some note that the noise level can be disruptive when the place is full, or that dishes are not always served hot, especially during peak times. Cleanliness is generally perceived positively, though minor issues may arise on busy days. Nevertheless, the "Lion - Boreham" remains a place appreciated for its consistency and character.

A special aspect of the restaurant is its history and versatility. Originally a classic pub, it was taken over by a local entrepreneur and transformed into a modern establishment with an attached hotel and event space. It offers not only daily meals but also breakfast for overnight guests and special events like weddings at the adjacent "Lion House." Its location in Boreham makes it an ideal stop for travelers or those looking to take advantage of the proximity to Chelmsford and its attractions.

Mixed food. Chicken liver pate was lovely however the fish pie was disappointing. There were nine in our party ranging from 25 to 80 in age and we ate in the conservatory. Apart from the battered fish and chips which was excellent I would say the rest was nice but average. What really grates is the service charge which was automatically added to our bill. I am aware this is stated in the specials QR code however our waitress seemed unhappy whenever we requested anything, no thanks for passing plates to her, all too much trouble, she definitely did not add to our experience and was no way worth paying an additional £50 as a tip!

Been here for over 10 years, always busy, great atmosphere and a good selection of food on their specials board. Also a great selection of drinks from beers and ales (inc locally produced!) to wines and cocktails!

I had the pleasure of being booked for my wedding Dj and Selfie Pod package at The Lion Inn. What a wonderful venue, with such a great space for weddings. The team there are amazing, so friendly and gave me great communication before from Georgina, with lots of options to get set up ready for the evening. So easy to work along side, with the staff paying attention to every aspect of the wedding to make it a success! Thank you for being such a pleasure to work with you !

We hired out one of their private rooms for an event. The meetings running up to the event meant that the whole day ran exactly as we hoped it would. Me and my husband had staff approach us and check a couple of times that everything was running as we wanted. The day ran very smoothly we had a wonderful time and that was all down to the planning of the staff at the Lion and their professionalism.

Choose here for a Christmas get together with a large group of friends. Booked a Sunday lunchtime in December. The venue looked so pretty with all the Christmas decorations & lights inside and out. Great service. Great food. We all had a wonderful time. It has a large carpark for easy parking. It's my first visit, I will happily return.

Lovely place, great staff, oh and the food my god! Its amazing. My only hope is you will still be able to book a table going forward, they introduced it recently and makes the whole experience better. My biggest gripe is when its busy its too noisy. I'd prefer they'd partition the open plan restaurant to baffle the noise as it tends to feel like a school canteen.

Looked after our chaotic 25 strong family party (ranging in age from a 96 year old in a wheelchair to a 2 years old) with great professionalism. Separate back room was ideal, menu and quality of food excellent and the waiting staff were great, and patient! Thanks everyone!!

One of the best restaurants in Essex, good value, fantastic quality food and great service . I have to comment on the manager Leanne, what a professional, attentive and hardworking employee. She sorted out an issue quickly and efficiently. The Lion is lucky to have her.
